Chapter 14

Selene

Selene looked up, into the dark, starless sky above. She wiped her sweaty forehead. Her hands were shaky. Her insides felt like they were going to hurl out of her mouth at any moment.

Her sister's hand wrapped around arm. She pulled her up so that she was sitting on her bottom.

“The first time I travelled through a black hole I had the same reaction. It’ll get better as you get used to it.”

Selene grimaced as her stomach growled. She had no desire to “get used to it.” This one trip was enough to last her a lifetime.

“Arghhhhh!” Aldair lurched over a bush. The sounds of the morning’s breakfast spilling out to the ground penetrated the otherwise silent night. He moved his head back. His face was a shade of green and yellow. “No! That was the best carrot soup I’ve had in weeks. I can’t lose it like… not again!” He craned his head behind the bush again. The sounds came again.

“Stop being a baby,” said Aya.

Aldair looked up. For a second it looked as if he was going to protest, but then he returned to emptying his stomach.

“Is there anything we can do to help him?” asked Selene, concerned.

“Nope,” said Aya. “He’ll be okay. Just give him a few minutes. In the meantime, we have to set up camp. We’re past the mountains, but tomorrow we have a long day left of travelling.”

“Okay, big sister.” Accepting that there was little she could do to help, she wasn’t a healer, after all, she did as her sister instructed.
